Preparing our future scientists and engineers to advance sustainability at the food-energy-water nexus

ABOUT

With the ongoing rapid expansion of human population, safe food, sustainable energy and clean water are urgently needed. At the same time, conventional agricultural production is plagued with low efficiency of waste and wastewater treatment, high demand for energy and large consumption of fresh water. Therefore, innovative technologies and strategies must be developed to implement sustainable development at the food-energy-water (FEW) nexus.

The SAFE-Water Project introduces state-of-the-art applications in Environmental Engineering and Science to K-12 students (especially female  and underrepresented minority students) and motivate their interest in pursuing higher education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). At the same time, STEM major undergraduate students from the joint College of Engineering of Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) and Florida State University (FSU) assist the learning and serve as role models for our K-12 participants. A supportive committee consisting of personnel from academia, industry and government agencies is also part of this project to provide career advice.
